The short version. StartSmart has no accounts and no user database. Your alarms, your goals, your streaks and your audio live on your device. Three things do leave it, and each is described in full below: the text used to generate your wake-up message, advertising measurement data, and — only if you paste a video link — that link.

1. Information we collect

1.1 There is no account

StartSmart has no sign-up, no sign-in and no password. We do not collect your name or your email address, and there is no server holding a profile for you.

To tell one installation from another — for subscription entitlement and for advertising measurement — the app uses a device identifier. Where you are signed in to iCloud, this is the anonymous per-developer record identifier Apple provides; otherwise it is Apple's identifier for vendors, stored in the device keychain. Neither identifies you personally, and neither is linked to a name, email address or phone number anywhere.

1.2 Information you provide

  • Goals and intentions — the sentence you write about what you want to wake up for.
  • Preferences — motivation category, tone, chosen voice, age band and form of address, wake time, alarm settings.
  • Custom wake-up text — any script you type yourself.
  • Video links — if you paste a link to a video in order to use its audio as an alarm sound.

1.3 Information collected automatically

  • App activity — alarms created, wake-ups, snoozes, streaks. Stored on your device.
  • Onboarding and purchase events — which steps you completed and whether you subscribed, sent to our advertising measurement provider (section 4).
  • Advertising identifier (IDFA) — only if you allow tracking when iOS asks. See section 4.

1.4 Voice and audio

Speech recognition runs entirely on your device. If you use your voice to dismiss an alarm, the audio is processed by Apple's on-device Speech framework. It is never recorded, never stored, and never sent to us or to anyone else.

If you import audio from a video in your photo library, the video is read on your device and the audio track is extracted there. The video itself is never uploaded. The resulting sound file stays on your device.

1.5 What we do not collect

  • Your name, email address or phone number
  • Location data, precise or coarse
  • Health or fitness data
  • Contacts, calendars, photos or browsing history
  • Payment card details — Apple handles all payments; we never see them

2. How we use information

  • To generate your wake-up message. Your goal, tone and persona choice are sent as prompt text to our AI provider, which writes a short script. That script is then sent to our text-to-speech provider, which returns audio.
  • To run the app. Scheduling alarms, playing audio, tracking streaks and remembering your settings — all on your device.
  • To manage your subscription. Verifying entitlement through Apple and our subscription provider.
  • To measure advertising. Understanding which campaigns bring people to StartSmart. See section 4.

We do not use your goals or scripts to train AI models, and we do not build advertising profiles from them.

3. Who we share information with

We do not sell personal information. We share it only with the service providers that make the app work.

AI script generation

xAI (Grok)

Receives: your goal text, tone and persona context, age band and form of address, as prompt text.

Does not receive: your name, email address, device identifier or advertising identifier.

Text-to-speech

ElevenLabs

Receives: the generated or typed script text, and the voice you selected.

Does not receive: any identifier for you.

Advertising measurement

AppsFlyer

Receives: install and session events, onboarding funnel events, purchase events, your device identifier, and your advertising identifier if you allowed tracking. This is shared with advertising partners in order to attribute campaigns.

AppsFlyer privacy policy

Subscription management

RevenueCat

Receives: Apple transaction and receipt data, and an anonymous app user identifier, to determine whether your subscription is active.

RevenueCat privacy policy

Video link import

StartSmart's link resolver

Used only when you paste a video link. Receives: the link, with tracking parameters stripped, and a hashed device token used solely to enforce a daily limit. The service keeps no database and no user records; the resulting audio clip is deleted from its temporary storage within 15 minutes, whether or not it was downloaded.

Platform

Apple

iCloud (for the anonymous identifier only), StoreKit (payments and subscriptions), AlarmKit, and on-device speech recognition. Apple's handling of this data is governed by Apple's privacy policy.

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect our rights or the safety of others.

4. Tracking and advertising

StartSmart does track you across apps and websites for advertising measurement, and asks your permission before doing so.

We advertise StartSmart on third-party platforms. To know which advertisements lead to installs and subscriptions, we use AppsFlyer as our measurement provider. When iOS asks whether StartSmart may track you:

  • If you allow it, your device's advertising identifier (IDFA) is shared with AppsFlyer and, through it, with the advertising platform that showed you the ad.
  • If you decline, no advertising identifier is collected. Measurement continues in aggregate through Apple's SKAdNetwork and other privacy-preserving methods that do not identify your device.

Declining costs you nothing in the app. You can change your answer at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking on your device.

5. Where your data lives

Your alarms, goals, generated audio, imported sounds, streaks and settings are stored on your device — in app storage, user defaults and the keychain. There is no StartSmart account database and no cloud backup of your alarms. If your device is backed up to iCloud or to a computer, that backup is governed by Apple's terms, not ours.

Data sent to the providers in section 3 is transmitted over TLS and retained according to each provider's own policy. Our link resolver retains nothing beyond the 15-minute window described above.

6. Your choices and rights

  • See and export your data. Settings → Your data → Export my data.
  • Delete your data. Settings → Your data → Clear alarms & history removes your alarms, audio and history. Deleting the app removes everything else stored on the device.
  • Stop tracking. iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
  • Manage or cancel your subscription. iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions.

Because we hold no account and no server-side profile, there is generally nothing for us to retrieve or erase on your behalf — the controls above act on the only copy. If you are in a jurisdiction granting rights of access, correction, deletion, portability or objection (including under the GDPR and the CCPA/CPRA), and you believe we hold information about you, write to privacy@startsmartmobile.com and we will respond within the period the law requires.

We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising as those terms are defined under the CCPA/CPRA, beyond the advertising measurement described in section 4, which you control through the tracking permission.

7. Children's privacy

StartSmart is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Wake-up messages are generated by an AI model and are not individually reviewed before you hear them. If you believe a child has provided us with information, contact privacy@startsmartmobile.com.

8. Changes and contact

If this policy changes materially, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where the change is significant, notify you in the app.
